If you’re new to using CBD products, it may seem a little daunting. There doesn’t seem to be a cut and dry way to use CBD or a dose that works for everyone. You may find that the dose you started with may need some fine-tuning before it begins to work the most effectively for you. The dosing is different for many different brands of CBD product brands, and dosing requirements typically are expected to change over time. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, your body type, lifestyle, and the method you choose to use, your dosing can be expected to be unique to you. So where do you get started?
First, try to find the highest possible ratio of CBD to THC, as the more THC present in the product the more likely you are going to feel high from the product. THC does work very well for some individuals, particularly those with a low appetite and/or a lot of pain, such as with cancer patients. If you are suffering from any form of anxiety, it is much more important for you to find the lowest needed amount of THC in your product as THC is known to increase anxiety symptoms for those individuals. Look for a CBD product with a ratio somewhere around 1:30 THC to CBD.
As with any pharmaceutical, your body mass should be taken in to account to properly determine the dose that will be most effective for you to feel the effects of the CBD. Most medical shops will recommend that you start by taking 10 mg of the product as needed throughout the day, but a more precise way of determining your dose is to start with 1 mg of CBD per 100 pounds of body weight. 10 mg will be a good starting dose if you are about 100 lbs, but if you are closer to 200 pounds, 20 mg might be a better place to start.
Measure with Tincture
Now, we’ve been talking about dosage in terms of milligrams, but a bottle of tincture is going to operate in terms of milliliters. Let’s say you’ve bought a 30 ml bottle of tincture which contains 1500 mg of CBD. You’ve already calculated by your body weight, and you’re starting dose is 10 mg. The typical tincture dropper will hold 1 ml of tincture, which is going to come out to 50 mg of CBD. If you were to take a whole droppers amount in one dosing you would be overdoing it by 5 times. Each dropper will be marked out by 1 ml, 0.75 ml, 0.5 ml, and 0.25 ml. So in this case, your starting dose with your tincture would be 0.25 ml, the smallest dose in your dropper.
When using your tincture, measuring out your dose with the dropper. Drop the liquid under your tongue and allow it to sit there for at least 15 seconds before swallowing. Remember to allow from 20-40 minutes for your CBD tincture to take effect.
Measure with Vaping
Vaping CBD is a great option if you need the CBD to take immediate effect. To start vaping CBD, you have two options. You can buy an already mixed cartridge, in which case the CBD mg content will be on the packaging and you can determine your dose that way, or you can buy e-liquid vape juice and CBD oil separately and mix them yourself. It is of course much easier to buy a premixed cartridge, but the benefit of mixing it on your own is that the quality of the CBD will be higher than in a premixed cartridge.
To mix your CBD oil and e-liquid together, first, melt the CBD oil in a bowl of hot water until it because runny. Then you should determine the ratio that you want of oil to liquid, a 1:1 ratio is typical, though some would argue that a 2:3 ratio is better.
Measure by Capsule
By far the easier way to dose is by way of the capsule. CBD capsules are already measured out and therefore pretty error proof. Simply take as many as are prescribed to you, typically only once or twice a day. This method is common for patients suffering from epileptic seizures. The CBD mg doses of capsules are much larger than any other form, as it is required that it pass through the stomach lining into the bloodstream, which is an inefficient delivery method, and will take 1-2 hours for the CBD to start to take effect. Capsules are therefore not ideal for anxiety or inconsistent and severe pain, but great if you are taking CBD regularly and need to be extremely discreet.
Increasing Your Dose
Of course, just as with any other pharmaceutical, the dose that you start with may need to be gradually increased over time. Some days you may need more than other days in order to feel the effects, perhaps because of increased activity, decreased activity, or simply more of your symptoms are being felt like a certain time. Please keep in mind that any increase needs to be taken in small increments, as over-dosing on CBD, though it is not toxic nor will it get you high, may cause you to feel uncomfortably drowsy or lightheaded, which would make driving or operating other forms of heavy machinery dangerous.
Consult with your physician
Talk to your doctor before being to use CBD products, as there is a different recommendation for those with different levels of anxiety. It has been recently found that using more than ones required a daily dose of CBD may actually decrease the effectiveness of the drug on symptoms of stress, paranoia, and anxiety, particularly for those suffering from PTSD. A middle ground dosage is what is commonly recommended for those suffering from anxiety. If you begin to experience any uncomfortable or severe side effects, stop the use of the CBD products immediately and consult again with your physician before continuing use.
